Level of Difficulty: Beginner

Drawing: There is no drawing in this workshop. Yay!

Workspace: For this workshop you do NOT need to use expensive watercolor paper. I do recommend using watercolor paper, but it can be student grade or a less expensive brand.

In this workshop we are going to talk about colors, how to use the color wheel, and why it's important to learn how to mix colors form our own palette vs copying what instructors do in their tutorials.

Once we understand how to mix our own colors, I'm going to give you a Color Mixing Challenge! 🎨 In this challenge I will pick out specific colors form a variety of references for you to match.

Colors I plan to use:

  • Cadmium Lemon Yellow
  • New Gamboge
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Burnt Umber
  • Sepia
  • Cerulean Blue
  • Phthalo Blue
  • Hooker's Green
  • Payne's Gray
  • Lamp Black

I use Winsor & Newton watercolor paints, but you don't have to. You can substitute the colors above for similar colors in your palette. They don't have to be the same colors.

Tools & Materials:

  • A LOT practice watercolor paper
  • Round brushes (I plan to use size: 4 or 6)
  • Water
  • Paper towels
